What type rock is Flint?
Flint is a microcrystalline rock made of silica and is considered to have begun forming soon after the deposition of Chalk. The silica replaces the original Chalk carbonate grain by grain. The carbonate has to be dissolved with silica precipitated in its place.

Is flint a rock?
Flint is a sedimentary rock consisting of microscopic, nearly undetectable (cryptocrystalline) crystals of the mineral quartz (SiO2). Flint is hard (it will scratch steel), but it is also brittle and breaks with a glasslike (conchoidal) fracture that can produce sharp edges.
